Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea)
STATUS : NOT IN SOMERSET
Where this species had only occasionally visited the UK prior to 2024, 2024 was the first year in which confirmed breeding occurred. It was still present in 2025, so it appears to be breeding successfully.
The only known location for this species is Silverlakes in Dorset.
If this species gains a strong foothold in the UK, it is likely to be found in Somerset at some point in the future.
Both males and females have a broad, flat abdomen, which is unique compared with other darters in the country.
Males are predominantly a striking scarlet colour, with scarlet eyes that can be blue at the base.
Females are a dull yellow-brown colour with a distinct pale stripe between the wings, which is diagnostic.
It is generally easy to distinguish this species from other darters in the UK.
