Emerald Damselfly (Lestes sponsa)
There are a few species of Emerald Damselflies in the UK, Somerset has just one species.
It is more of an unusual one for Somerset and tends to be found in higher ground (Exmoor / Mendips).
This is a summer species and generally around July / August.
Males are mainly metallic green on top and a pale powder blue colour lower down.
Females are mainly metallic green on top and a creamy / beige lower down.
Also, these tend to spread their wings when resting, unlike the rest of damselflies in Somerset which will close their wings when resting.
