Black Darter (Sympetrum danae)
A summer season dragonfly and one of our smallest.
Males are predominately black when mature with yellow patches. Immature, they are yellow, very similar to the female.
Females are mainly yellow with a black base to their abdomen.
Males won't be confused as they are the only black dragonfly we have. The females could be confused with the other darters we have in the county.
Want to See
They like bog pools and ponds on the heathland/moorland of Exmoor and the Mendips.
Especially Good
Pinkworthy Pond - Exmoor (July / August / September)
Priddy Ponds - Mendips (July / August / September)
